Michelle Obama and that red Narciso Rodriguez dress

FASHION 17

As you probably noticed through your tears (of sorrow or joy!), when Michelle Obama appeared on-stage last night, she wore a rather striking red dress.  It was Narciso Rodriguez, from his Spring 09 collection that only recently appeared on the runway.  Clearly, a little behind-the-scenes action happened to make Michelle’s fashion-forward sartorial choice possible.  What do you think: love it or hate it?

the lighting and background were not working in michelle’s favor IMO. it looked like a maternity dress to me. love the picture from the catwalk tho. I think if the black material was shimmering like that michelle would have pulled it off.

Love Michelle; cried with happiness. The dress, not so much.

Same here. I don’t even like it on the model. I’m thinking they didn’t realize what it would look like from afar. That crisscross action in the middle is distracting. She would have been much better in a solid color.

P.S. I’m elated that her husband won!

    Not flattering.

  5. I loved the dress and thought she looked fab. I’m so glad she didn’t wear the typical first lady suit. I thought it was very modern- she looked stunning…

I actually think the dress photographs better than “in person” (TV!). I like it and it was a bold choice that shows her future as the Fashion Queen of America. :) Love the line in the article about not being jealous of France & Carla Bruni!

Although I was very enthusiastic about the results- the same didn’t go for the dress. Even last night as I watched the results I kept wondering what on earth she was wearing. I thought it made her look a little hippy and was distracting. However, Mrs. Obama is a gorgeous lady– oh wait, FIRST lady! :)

A rare misstep for Michelle. She usually has great fashion sense, and looks terrific, even in J.Crew! That dress was confusing from a distance, and unattractive. Also, the girls are adorable, but the black dress on the little one would not have been my first pick.

I though she could have done much better. But Congrats to the OBAMA’s!

I think it would have been much better without the sweater. It kind of didn’t make sense with it on, and didn’t match her “look” of sleeveless dresses.

I’ll admit, I was one of those that cried from sorrow. And while I disagree with her on pretty much everything, Michelle is pretty great when it comes to style. LOVE her “I’m an everywoman” style, but, sadly, I am just not digging the dress. And even though I’m not exactly looking foward to Inaugration day, I AM looking foward to seeing what the fabulous Mrs. O wears :)

On a side note, can we all agree that their daughters are absolutely freaking adorable?

Fantastic ! The victory, not the dress…

Disappointed in the election, disappointed in the dress. Usually she looks so sharp but this was a major mistake. The two little ones are so sweet but once again thought they could have chosen better dresses for them. Looking forward to see what she wears on inauguration day. Hopefully, she won’t listen to whoever advised her on last night’s choice. I think she does better on her own!

I remember thinking she looked great!
Didn’t see the negativity coming, but meh.
I think she will make a wonderfully interesting, grounded, educated and beautiful first lady!!!!!

Hated it. Looked like a bib. Or a black widow spider. I mean, I know she was trying to coordinate with her daughters. Maybe it was also some kind of ironic statement (she’s probably witty that way) about how she is down to earth because she used to be a waitress or something. I just don’t understand why the red ends so awkwardly at the side seams of the dress. It would have made more sense if it stretched out towards the back a little more.

LOVED the election result, didn’t like the dress so much. I agree that it would have been a lot better had the color continued all the way around, rather than having side panels, and when seeing it on TV, it looked like a shorter burst of red on the bottom would have been good (though the see-through aspect would probably be a bit much for her typical look). I’m also not sure if it can work well with a scoop neck, but I think that’s a much more minor quibble. Essentially, it looks like a dress that was reworked quickly, and it didn’t have the same coherence as the original. It does photograph a lot better than it showed on TV, though.

She always looks so classy but that dress was ick. I do agree that the stills look better than the video – but I still don’t like the dress (even on the model it’s hard to like IMHO). Mostly, I think with all of the dark background (of night) is what really ruined it. I thought the lines made her look heavy – I’m sure if it had been daytime it wouldn’t have been “as bad”. (but it wasn’t as bad as Mrs. McCain – I hated her clothes!)
