William and Kate arrive in Canada

Thursday, June 30th, 2011

Kate Middleton wears a blue jacket in Canada

Kate leaves Heathrow for Canada wearing a blue jacket...

They’re here! They’re here! (Well, they’re in Canada, at least.) William and Kate arrived in Ottawa, Canada this morning, as part of their 11-day North America Domination Tour.

And arrives wearing a navy lace dress by Erdem Moralioglu, from Montreal, Canada.

Alas, there is no polo trip in my future next week. I came thisclose to covering the event for a major online site, but after assigning me the story, the editor emailed to say that the list had just closed. I only cried a little bit.

Oh well, I’ll just stalk WireImage for the duration of their trip and report back to you!

Get the Look: Eva Mendes for Thierry Mugler

Eva Mendes Thierry Mugler

Eva Mendes is the new face of Thierry Mugler

Thierry Mugler has made a name for itself as the go-to fragrance house for Love it! or Hate it! perfumes. Their gourmand vanilla-chocolate-and-caramel-laced fragrance Angel is one of my least favorite scents of all time. It literally smells like cat pee to me. However, their jasmine, amber and cashmere fragrance Alien is–to my picky nose, at least–transcendent. (I’m even more obsessed with a flanker juice they released called Alien Liqueur de Parfum. So. Good.)

Personally, I waver in my opinion of the 3rd Thierry Mugler scent, Womanity, which features caviar notes. I like it and it’s certainly unique, but I’m not obsessed with it…and at the end of the day, you have to love your perfume, don’t you think?

(By the way, if you’re wondering how to pronounce Thierry Mugler, it’s Tier-ry, Moo-glair. I’ve gone around for years saying “Moo-glay.” Fail.)

Anyhow, Tier-ry Moo-glair has just announced Eva Mendes as their latest face, and she made a glowing appearance at their launch event in NYC last week. I know you gals like makeup breakdowns, so I thought you’d especially enjoy this one, since Eva’s rocking the sort of “What? Me? Makeup?” freshness that most women–myself included–spend half an hour trying to pretend takes 8 seconds. (I also must confess that I had no idea Thierry Mugler made makeup. Where the hell have I been?)

“Celebrity makeup artist Genevieve Herr primed Eva’s skin with Clarins Beauty Flash Balm and Clarins Multi-Active Day Cream.

Using Thierry Mugler Beauty, she created this sultry, summer look to complement Eva’s mint green MUGLER dress.

- First, she used ’Cooling Effect Compact Foundation’ in Color #50.

- To contour Eva’s features, she brushed on the ‘Blush & Light Powder’ in Brown & White.

- To prep the lips, she applied ‘Flash Lips Foundation’ in Nude and blended with ‘Rouge Unique Lipstickin Heaven.

- To create the sultry dramatic eye, she lined the whole eye from inner to outer corner onboth the upper and lower lash lines in black “Eye Liner Cream“.

- To highlight the lids, she swept on “Eye Shadow & Lights Quartet in Sublime Nature to contour the eyes with beige and golden hues.

- Finally, she applied “Flash on Lashes Mascara’ in Black to the lashes, but the secret weapon was a final coat of ‘Vinyl Gloss‘ on the lashes to leave them looking wet and glossy.

The skincare products are at Clarins.com and all of the makeup is available for purchase in the US at Mugler.com.”

Chanel Fall 2011 Makeup Collection

The Chanel Fall 2011 makeup collection has just been released, and it will probably come as no surprise to you, buuut it’s awesome.

Chanel Fall 2011 makeup collection eye shadow

I’m loving the Quadra Eye Shadow compact in Prelude, which features 4 neutral shadows that are perfect for creating a foolproof smokey eye. I’m all about the smokey eye (it’s basically the only makeup look I ever do), but these shadows are above and beyond effective. I’m especially obsessed with the darkest shadow, which goes on like a brownish-plum.

Also incredible: Glossimer in 158, a reddish-brown berry with shimmery gold flecks. It goes on pretty sheer, but is buildable and gives your lips that perfect just-bitten flush.

Drybar: No cuts, no color, just blowouts for only $35

Wednesday, June 29th, 2011

Have you heard about Drybar? It’s a new LA-based chain of blow-dry salons–no color, no cuts, just a wash-’n'-blowdry for $35–that has completely exploded and rolled out all over the country. If you don’t yet have a Drybar near you, you probably will soon! (Seriously; it feels like they’re opening up a new location every other week.)

There’s something so ridiculously simple about the concept of Drybar that it’s hard to believe nobody thought of this sooner. As I mentioned, the salons don’t offer any cuts or color: just blowouts (wash included) for only $35. The devil is in the details: while blowdry bars aren’t new, Drybar’s fun, girlie vibe takes the blowout experience to a sublime level.

What makes Drybar so awesome? Photos of glamorous celebrities like Grace Kelly, young Marilyn Monroe, Jean Harlow and Sophia Loren dot the walls. A glass of champagne arrives in your hands the second you sit. Classic chick-flicks like How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days play (with captions turned on, so you can “watch” while the blow dryers hum). Oh, yeah: the blowouts themselves–a “cocktail” menu of blowout options is available–are fantastic, too!

I visited the very first Drybar in Brentwood the day it opened last year to cover it for VanityFair.com, so I sort of feel like Drybar is “mine.”

Alas…the secret’s now out.
