Charlotte Casiraghi at the Cartier International Polo in Dubai

Tuesday, February 28th, 2012

What have we here?! Three of my personal favorites–Cartier, polo and Charlotte Casiraghi–together in one place? Yes, please.

Charlotte jetted to Dubai to present the trophies for the 7th Cartier International Dubai Polo Challenge at Desert Palm Resort and Polo Club. Charlotte’s presence isn’t really surprising, since she’s such a horsey person that Gucci even custom-makes her show jumping kit.

I don’t cover polo as much as I used to, for obvious reasons: I’m no longer field-side on a near daily basis! I’m not sure if some of my readers were aware, but back in ‘06 and ‘07, when I was living in Palm Beach and England and working for the polo player Carlos Gracida, I literally spent about 5 hours a week on a polo field, often with my computer and working on my book Beauty Confidential! Sigh. Those were the days.

The game of Kings is still near and dear to my heart, and so it’s always exciting for me to see it (and the gorgeous Charlotte!) receive the attention it deserves.

Sponsored Post: Get the Hottest Oscar Hairstyles at Home

Tuesday, February 28th, 2012

We finally made it the most glamorous awards show of the year: the Oscars! Just as we expected, we saw some gorgeous gowns and amazing hairstyles. While we can’t help you score a vintage Dior dress, we have great tips to get your hair looking red-carpet ready. Wella Professionals was responsible for some of the best looks of the night, and now their celebrity stylists are sharing their tips on how they created these hot Hollywood hairstyles.

Michelle Williams
Michelle’s pixie is very modern and sophisticated chic. The hair has just enough texture to make the look sweet, yet edgy.

To Get The Look: First, start by applying Sebastian Professional Mousse Forte to wet hair, then allow it to air dry. With a small round brush, finish off with a blow dry that gives the hair more height, then use your hands to set the part and bangs. Finish the look with Wella Professionals Stay Essential Finishing Spray to set in place.

Penelope Cruz
The actress showed off very old Hollywood glamour, channeling the 1950s Grace Kelly finger waves that perfectly complemented her Armani Privé gown.

To Get The Look: Start with dry hair and use a small amount of Wella Professionals Natural Volume Styling Mousse at the roots. Set hair in steam hot rollers by rolling hair straight back from the head. This will give hair extra texture and curl. Use smaller rollers at the back of the head to create a tighter curl, and then pin hair underneath into a faux bob. Lightly mist with Wella Professionals Dynamic Fix 45 Second Crafting Spray, then back comb and tease at the root. Brush out the finger waves into place and set with Wella Professionals Stay Essential Finishing Spray.

Leslie Mann
Stylist Rod Ortega decided to give Leslie a ponytail for a more youthful look that made for a fun contrast to her elegant, sequin-detailed dress. The high ponytail also works well for her face shape, creating a beautiful silhouette.

To Get The Look: Start out by prepping wet hair with Wella Professionals Velvet Amplifier to prime hair for a smooth blowout. Use a small amount of Wella Professionals Mirror Polish Shine Serum on the ends of the hair for added smoothness and shine. Blow out with a round brush at the roots for texture and use a Mason Pearson paddle brush to blow dry from mid-length to the ends. Back comb for extra volume, especially at the roots, and use a flat brush from mid-length to ends again so there is texture, but not curl. Then leave the front and sides of the hair out, pull the rest of the hair into a ponytail near the top of the back of the head. Smooth the hair left out of the ponytail back and wrap around the elastic to hide the band. Spray the style with Wella Professionals Stay Essential Finishing Spray to hold in place while leaving it with lots of natural movement.

Olivia Wilde
Stylist Davy Newkirk and Olivia opted to go for a chic 70’s inspired updo to complement her strapless Gucci gown that she wore to the 2012 Vanity Fair Oscar Party. The roughed up, simplistic yet super chic updo gave her a timeless and effortlessly beautiful look.

To Get The Look: First, apply Wella Professionals Pearl Styler to wet hair and rough dry it, using your hand and a blow dryer. This will give hair extra texture before styling. Next, gather hair at the crown of the head and secure with a bungee cord. You can tease the ends to rough it up a bit more, for added edgy texture. Loosely twisted the hair around the bungee for a loose structure and secure with bobby pins and hair pins. To finish, spray the hair with Wella Professionals Dynamic Fix hairspray, and rough up the hair with fingers at the root and around the bun, spraying once again with the Dynamic Fix to add sheen and hold the look for the night.

Nina Dobrev
Celebrity stylist Riawna Capri gave Nina a youthful looking fishtail ponytail that is easier to create at home than you think.

To Get The Look: First, spray Wella Professionals Ocean Spritz all over and scrunch hair for a nice beachy texture. Loosely gather the hair into a slightly messy ponytail with a center part. Then, begin your fishtail braid. Once done, pull a couple pieces out to create a more distressed look and finish with a shine spray, such as Wella Professionals Shimmer Delight all over for a polished finish.

What red lipstick was Angelina Jolie wearing at the Oscars?

Angelina Jolie hair and makeup Academy Awards 2012

Angelina Jolie wearing a gorgeous red lipstick at the Oscars

I haven’t received any makeup breakdowns, nor have I been able to find information online–but I’m pretty sure the sublime red lipstick Angelina Jolie wore to the Oscars was MAC Russian Red:

If you’re ooh-ing and aah-ing over a crimson lipstick with orange tones, when in doubt: it’s always Russian Red.

My favorite Oscar 2012 beauty and fashion looks

Sunday, February 26th, 2012

What did you think of the Academy Awards? I’m not going to lie: I was super excited for tonight’s ceremony (Billy Crystal returns!) but I was left cold. Something was off–and worse than that, I felt like his jokes verged on mean. And not uncomfortable-but-still-hilarious Ricky Gervais mean, either, you know?

Am I alone in that opinion?

Anyhow, a few of the red carpet looks really stood out to me. I was obsessed with Jessica Chastain. She’s gorgeous, she’s talented, her McQueen dress is beyond, and she has hair worthy of a Keats ode.

Apparently I’m really having a thing for the redheads tonight, as I was also in love with Ellie Kemper’s auburn hair and sparkling Armani Prive dress.

Angelina Jolie can be a hit or miss on the red carpet. Sometimes she channels Elizabeth Taylor levels of epic radiance; sometimes she’s goth and grim-faced. Tonight, she looked phenomenal–and she knew it! That cocky hip stance on stage? It was a public, “Screw you, we all know I look freaking fantastic.” You do, Angelina. You do.

I’m really over actresses looking sour-faced on the red carpet (yeah, I’m talking to you, Rooney Mara), but I’ll give Rose Byrne’s scowl a pass because I’m still digging the Scarface bob–and her Vivienne Westwood dress simply makes me happy.

You know who does not make me happy? Princess Charlene of Monaco. She makes me really, really sad.

Dead eyes. Hope the throne was worth it, Charlene (WireImage)

Meanwhile, I know everybody was bowled over by Gwyneth Paltrow’s Tom Ford cape, but I really didn’t like it. (Sorry! Don’t hate me!) I did actually like her dress on stage without the cape, but I just cannot get behind that hair. It’s the Academy Awards, Gwyneth! I expect more from you than a loose, hastily constructed ponytail.

Finally: Milla Jovovich. While the Resident Evil franchise might be the only thing keeping her “relevant” (and I use that word loosely), when she shows up on the red carpet looking this divine, who cares what silly movies she stars in? Gorgeous!

I went to Williams Sonoma yesterday…

Where I couldn’t resist buying this:

Lodge 10 inch cast iron skillet

My new baby! It's a Lodge 10 inch cast-iron skillet

And this:

Jacques Pepin cookbook: Essential Pepin

Jacques Pepin's cookbook: Essential Pepin

I’ve been dying to buy both a Lodge Cast Iron skillet and Jacques Pepin’s cookbook Essential Pepin for ages–but you know how it’s easy to keep putting things off, thinking, “Oh, I’ll do that this weekend…” and suddenly it’s 5 months later and you still haven’t checked it off your to-do list?

Certainly never happens to me. Nope. No procrastination here!

(Cue me putting this blog post on hold for 45 minutes to read excerpts of Bringing Up Bebe on Amazon and to watch my own YouTube videos. It’s a sickness, really.)

Cast iron skillets require a little bit of care, but they’re not as cumbersome or scary as you might think. I’ve been practicing on Boyfriend Jolie’s over the past few months, and last night was the inaugural run chez moi of my OWN skillet – success!

Now let’s see if this thing lasts for the next 3 generations, as everybody promises.
