I’ve just landed in South Africa, where I’ll be for the next two weeks and where I’ve brought my trusty Paul Mitchell Beachy Texture Cream Gel with me. Even though it’s winter (well, winter-ish!) back home in LA, I’ve just arrived with my friend T. in sweltering South Africa, where here it’s summer–goodbye Frizz-Free Fall, hello again Air-Dry Summer! Can I just keep chasing summer all over the globe? Let’s make this happen.

T. and I currently in Johannesburg, then are heading next to Cape Town for several days, on to Franschoek and Stellenbosch for wine tasting, and then to a game reserve (I’d call it “going on safari,” although apparently they deport you here or something if you dare to call it that) called Royal Malewane. Finally, we’re taking a 24 hour train journey through the South African countryside back to Jo’burg on something called the Blue Train–which is supposed to be highly fancy. Fingers crossed I meet Ethan Hawke on it and we disembark together.

It’s been a weird couple of days here in Jolieland. You guys know that I tend not to get too personal with you, but it’s been a weekend of mixed emotions: crazy highs, because I saw Papa Jolie back home in Atlanta and had the best time with him. Crazy lows because of my romantic life, which I thought was going swimmingly, and is turning out to be a house of cards. So, I’m using this time in South Africa as an emotional cleanse: getting back to basics, cutting out the fat, focusing on myself, and taking stock (again) of what I want from a relationship, what I will tolerate, and what just won’t fly.

Phew. This finding true love thing is hard, y’all!

Thanks for sharing the personal stuff – it makes me (and your other readers) feel less alone. Have a great time in South Africa. I spent about a month in Kenya nearly ten years ago and it was an unforgettable once-in-a-lifetime adventure… and I trust that you will never forget it. :) Cheers to a little more Summer of Nadine. I’m right with you on this finding true love stuff. We can do it. In the meantime enjoy the good hair days, fancy trains, and spectacular scenery all around you.
