Britney Does Polo

Last month, I mentioned that Britney Spears was shooting her new video at the polo club, and the finished result is finally here!  She’s back in fine form — check it out, and tell me if you don’t understand why I think polo is the sexiest, most awesome sport in the world.  For those uninitiated in Jolie-lore, after I left the magazine industry in 2005, I spent nearly 2 years in Palm Beach and England working with Carlos Gracida, the winningest polo player in history–who happens to be the Queen of England’s favorite player!  (I literally have a photo in my possession of the Queen gazing up at Carlos with a goofy grin on her face.)

It’s reported that the video was shot at the Bacara Resort and Spa in Santa Barbara, but I’m pretty sure it was actually shot at the Santa Barbara Polo and Racquet Club in Carpinteria.   (Dude.  Jolie knows her polo.)  I think it’s time for a primer for my fair readers–it definitely looks like the polo trend is hotting up!

Très Jolie: Kate Middleton at Polo

The polo field is a jolly good place to make a fine match: Charles & Camilla, Di & Dodi, and Andrew & Fergie all kindled relationships by the pony lines.  Kate Middleton, it seems, is following in their footsteps; she was papped again this weekend watching Wills and Harry take place in a charity polo match at Cirencester Park Polo Club in Gloucestershire.  I covet this girl’s glossy casualness and effortlessly tousled hair.  (And the Prince boyfriend?  Well, sure…that might be a nice perk, too.)

Suddenly, polo is everywhere!

Prince Harry and I seem to have missed each other this weekend (while he was in New York, playing in the Veuve Clicquot Classic polo tournament on his first official visit to the states, I was, of course, on the other side of the pond), but I’m jazzed to see that polo is slowly but surely being accepted by American celebrities.  Where they lead, others follow, and maybe eventually polo will get reinstated as an Olympic sport and start enjoying the recognition it deserves.

Kate Hudson was among the celebrities who turned up to Governor’s Island for the second annual Veuve Clicquot Classic, looking smashing in a summery cream dress.  Madonna, her boytoy Jesus Luz and Marc Jacobs came, too.

Meanwhile, across the country, Britney Spears filmed her new video in Santa Barbara at the polo club.  I sense a trend!

Jolie writes for VanityFair.com!

Thursday, May 28th, 2009

Jolie has a few longterm goals: make it to the New York Times Bestseller list. Create a successful skincare line. Meet a man who brings out the best in me, and enjoy a travel-filled life with him. Do something so insanely fabulous that my birthday is turned into a national holiday after I die (hey, a girl can dream, right?) And–the ultimate, because pretty much all of the above will have had to happen for me to rate–be profiled in Vanity Fair.  Since I haven’t married any royalty (yet), starred in a hit film, hired my gardener/lover to murder somebody in the Hamptons, or been caught in a glamour-drenched international tax scandal, I will have to settle, for the time being, for the next best thing: writing for the Vanity Fair website!  When I was assigned the following piece on polo, I literally cried.  It wasn’t a full-on The Notebook-sob….but, yeah, I cried.  Check out my piece on the 10 Hottest Polo Players (you know about my polo background/obsession, right?) and I hope you enjoy!

Because it’s my birthday week, and I’m feeling thoughtful

Otherwise titled as “A Post That Really Has No Point, But Just ‘Cause…”

When I started working at Lucky, fresh out of college, I was a lowly beauty assistant with little input, terrified of everybody around me.  My job initially consisted of opening packages, arranging products in the beauty closet, organizing the in-demand director’s schedule (well, okay, that would be attempting to organize the in-demand director’s schedule, since I was universally acknowledged to be a terrible–but oh-so-eager!–assistant), and answering phones.  Hardly tasks necessitating an Ivy League diploma—yet I was hooked.  The place was drenched in glamour, each editor was more fabulous than the next, and as time progressed, I was passed micro-pieces to work on, eventually graduating to the Secret Ingredient page and occasional Q&A’s for the burgeoning website (oh, 2003, how long ago you seem!)  Those Q&A’s became the inspiration for the Beauty Questions I now answer (but which y’all have been lazy about recently, so send ‘em in!), and, of course, led to the creation of beauty blog 1.0 formerly called Jolie in NYC.

Cartier International Polo 2008 at Guards

Monday, July 28th, 2008

Yesterday was the biggest social event on the English calendar: Cartier International Polo Day at Guards Polo Club in Windsor.  I’ve been lucky enough to attend the past two years, and it is a seriously massive to-do; the 2006 party remains the best and wildest I’ve ever attended.  (And, believe me, with the pretty polo people, that’s saying something!)

Prince Harry attended with Chelsy Davy last year; this year, spectators were treated to an insanely dapper-looking Prince Charles
