Beauty Tip: Apple-cider vinegar for hair clarity

Monday, June 15th, 2009

Suffering from dull, lifeless hair?  Try this no-frills, amazingly effective trick from Kaz Amor, owner of West Hollywood’s Warren-Tricomi salon:

“Apple Cider Vinegar is my favorite at home remedy and something my grandma used to swear by. Dilute it with water and it really cleanses the surface of the hair which strips the residue. After, use a conditioning moisturizer so that hair does not feel brittle.”

With Lauren Conrad at Wango Tango

Lauren Conrad stopped by the gifting tent and we chatted for several minutes about her new book and the fact that we share the same hairdressers: Kaz Amor and Christine Symonds from Warren-Tricomi.  She was adorable, seemed genuinely excited about my book, and–despite the fact that her friends were waiting impatiently–took the time to pose for photos with people and talk to Patti Stanger from Millionaire Match.

Inching back towards blonde

Monday, April 13th, 2009

It’s been fun experimenting with red hair these past several months, but I’m now ready for a change.  The sun is shining!  Spring is in the air!  And, most importantly, I’m ready to feel like myself again.  I visited Kaz Amor at Warren-Tricomi LA last week, and we began the slow, gradual process of lightening my hair.  (In order to safely blondify it and not completely damage my strands, it’s best to do over several months–in reality, it will probably be about a year before my hair is back the way it was last November, when I took the red plunge.)  Kaz is a hair color master–he travels all over the country to educate stylists in salons on coloring techniques–and I knew I was in safe hands.  After highlights and root “smudges”, the color is now a soft, gorgeous strawberry blonde.  Check out my videos, above and below, of the before and after.

Tres Jolie: Jessica Lowndes from 90210

Tuesday, March 24th, 2009

Normally, when I receive press alerts from publicists with celebrity photos, I ignore.  But when this image of Jessica Lowndes from 90210 popped in my inbox this morning, I did a double-take.  Doesn’t she look absolutely earth-shatteringly gorgeous?  I especially dig the strong brows, lush lashes and glowing skin.  After gaping at the photo for about 60 full seconds, I put my beauty detective skills to work, quizzing artist Stevi Christine, who created this look, on the inspiration behind the makeup.

jessica_lowndes.jpg

Stevi says: “The look I was going for was old Hollywood glam meets New Hollywood. Think Brigitte Bardot, today. I created a heavy thick black cake eyeliner on the top of eyes. This liner adds attention to the eyes as it elongates, which draws everyone in. I rimmed a nude eyeliner (the best nude liner is Stila Kajal Eyeliner in Topaz) inside the eye which makes the eye brighter. I added individual lashes (Red Cherry) and a ton of Kevyn Aucoin’s Curling Mascara to add to the dramatic look!  Then I used a soft cheek color in Candlelight by Kevyn Aucoin.  To keep the focus on her eyes I used a nude matte lip (YSL Rouge Volupte #2 Sensual Silk).”

Thanks, Stevi!  Somehow I think it’s going to take more than makeup to get me looking as gorgeous as Jessica, but I’m certainly willing to try!

Confessions and Cocktails: a success!

Sunday, February 22nd, 2009

Thank you a thousand times over to all who came out for my event at Studio Fred Segal and who helped make yesterday so much fun.  I feel seriously blessed to have so many awesome readers!  The day was perfect from start to finish: Laura Mercier makeup artist Jessica and her assistant Anthony came to my house to get me ready, and then I dashed across town to Studio–it’s literally the LA beauty emporium–where they’d rolled out the proverbial red carpet.

After downing a few cocktails to calm my nerves, I chatted with all the guests, had my makeup touched up, and then read from Confessions of a Beauty Addict.  I was super excited to see Lindsay Price from Lipstick Jungle and Josh Radnor from How I Met Your Mother there, and corralled them into some cute photos!  Lindsay posed for several shots with Confessions and was excited to show Josh her copy!  (Pinch me.)

Special thanks to Charlie Perer, Dann Murphy and Mathew Aguilar from Studio, who made the entire event possible! Confessions of a Beauty Addict will be on sale at Studio, so stop by to get a copy, and check out the collections from Beaute, Burn Candles, Memoire Liquide custom fragrances and Korres while you’re there!

Check out all my photos from the busy weekend, which included a makeup application at the Warren-Tricomi beauty suite at the London Hotel, the launch party for Cellceuticals skincare and a Dollhouse screening and after-party with Eliza Dushku.

Lauren Conrad goes to the grocery store

Monday, October 20th, 2008

lauren_conrad_teen_choice_awards_preparty.jpgOn my way to a dinner party in Laurel Canyon last night, I stopped at Whole Foods to pick up some wine.  Walking through the cheeses aisle, I spotted Lauren Conrad with an army of blonde hipsterbots, all clad in blue, purple and pink flannel shirts, and all with long blonde locks tied back in braids.  (I am also convinced I saw Stephanie Pratt there, although she was on the other side of the store.  Mysterious.)  It pains me that I even know who these girls are…but let’s not pretend.  I do know.  I know what they look like, and I know who they date, and I know what their kitchen looks like, and I know that I need to stop watching MTV immediately before my IQ drops even further.

But!  Back to Lauren!  Her hair was some serious business: long and shiny and Boticelli-wavy, with said aforementioned braids woven throughout the back.  I know Lauren goes to Warren-Tricomi in West Hollywood, visiting Kaz Amor for color and Christine Symonds for cut (both of whom I’ve seen before, and who do fabulous work)…but looking red-carpet perfect is easy.  After all, you have a team of stylists catering to your every beauty whim, shellacking the bejeezus out of you until you resemble a Madame Tussauds wax mummy.  The true test of celebrity cuteness (and hairstyling adeptness) is spying one of ‘em in real life, in flannels, at Whole Foods on a Sunday evening…and realizing that they are still undeniably gorgeous.  You know, perhaps I’m smarter, a better writer, more kickass at Trivial Pursuit, maybe even quicker on the draw with an eyeliner pencil.  But when it comes to the looks game, that damn LC has me beat.  Sigh.

Rockin’ the waves n’ braids like nobody’s business

Seriously.  This girl’s hair is perfect.
