Beauty Realization: Bangs Hide Wrinkles (Well, Duh)

The appeal of bangs is a no-brainer: they’re adorable! They’re coy! They’re cute ‘n’ sexy, all at once!

This weekend, I realized another major upside to bangs that should have been patently obvious but had eluded me until now: with bangs, any lines and wrinkles on your forehead are erased. It’s as if they don’t exist.

Bangs are the anti-Botox.

Over the years, I’ve been vocal and honest about my love of Botox, going so far as to shoot weird YouTube videos of myself mid-injection chez le médecin. I totally understand why some people dislike Botox (whether it’s the mere concept that troubles them or the actual reality that freaks them out) but for me, it was a decision that made sense. And if I’m getting Botox, you’d better believe I’m not going to lie about it.

Amanda Peet and I once got into a lengthy and passionate discussion about Botox. She is majorly against it.

Side note: I don’t mind when celebrities say they dislike Botox. I DO mind when celebrities LIE about having Botox and pretend that their magically wrinkle-free faces are down to good genes and regular facials. That’s like when celebrities have tummy tucks immediately after their C-section, eat eight-hundred calorie diets and work out six times a week/twice a day, and then debut perfectly-flat post-baby stomachs on the cover of US Weekly a month later with a misleading headline screaming HOW I GOT MY BODY BACK!

Makes. My. Blood. Boil.

It’s been more than a year since I’ve had Botox, and I don’t even miss it. Sure, when I have my bangs off my face with a headband, I see the deep furrows in between my brow (known as Elevenses) reminding me that my skin is not as taut and smooth as it was when I was, say, twenty-three. Or five.

But the point is, with bangs, I never really see my forehead. It’s hidden! It’s Photoshopped! It’s a zero-wrinkle zone!

Last year, you couldn’t swing a cat in Hollywood without hitting a hot young thang sporting fringe. But trends come and trends go: I’m not about to jettison a flattering look because Allure tells me it’s “out.”

Yessiree. The bangs just might be here to stay.
